Dr Andy Xiao, Chinese registered vet, graduated from Northeast Agriculture University with a master’s degree of clinical veterinary science. Now he is working at Ming Wang Animal hospital, he had practiced within small animal clinical work for about ten years. Regulations for exporting animals from China

There are two parts to moving your pet from China to another country - Export and import.

It is a legal requirement for all pets to have a yearly rabies vaccination and for all dog owners to have registered their dog with the local police station.

Import

Let’s focus on import first because this is the problematic part. Get a copy of the regulations for the importing country and count back the weeks required for preparations.

General requirements

All countries will need your pets to have a rabies vaccination and the breed specific multi-vaccination:

• Dogs vaccinated against distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis and

parainfluenza plus/ minus leptospirosis.

• Cats vaccinated against rhinotracheitis, calici virus and feline

paneleucopaenia.

Country specific requirements:

Americas (excluding Hawaii) - No other requirements Hawaii - Rabies antibody titre taken 1 month after rabies vaccination and 3 months before import.

Europe (excluding UK, Ireland) - Rabies antibody titre taken 1 month after rabies vaccination and 3 months before import. If your pet has a Pet Passport with the rabies antibody titre validated in Europe, no rabies blood sample is required.

Asia – Some country specific regulations. Please note certain countries like Singapore, Japan, Korea and Taiwan require a rabies antibody titre.

UK, Ireland - 6 month quarantine will be required regardless of pre-export procedures.

Africa - Very country specific regulations.

NZ and Australia - you pet cannot be imported directly from China regardless of preparations here.

To get into UK, Ireland, NZ and Australia without quarantine is possible if your pet stays in a ‘listed’ country for 6 months. ‘Listed’ countries include Europe,Singapore, HK, etc.

Timing

As long as your pet is up to date with their vaccinations you need to plan your preparations about going to the majority of the Americas a month or two before.

If you are going anywhere else, you need to be planning 4 months before to ensure that if a rabies antibody titre is required then this can be done in time.

Microchip

If your pet needs to have a rabies antibody blood sample then it will need to be micro chipped as it is widely recognized as the most effective method for pet identification.

The Animal Health and Immunity Certificate and Rabies Antibody Laboratory submission forms need to record the microchip number.

 Rabies antibody titre

If your pet needs to have a Rabies vaccination the antibody response needs to be greater than 0.5 iu/ml of blood.

To ensure this, the pet should have had a rabies injection 1 month prior to testing the blood sample.

Please note the following:

Hawaii - Rabies antibody sample to be tested specifically at either Kansas State University or the DOD Food Analysis and Diagnostic Laboratory in Texas.

Europe - Sample to be tested by an internationally recognized laboratory in Europe or Japan.

Asia - Please note certain countries like Japan, Korea and Taiwan need the sample to be tested by one of a handful of specific laboratories including Biobest, which we routinely use.

If you wish to reduce costs then you can test the sample through a recognized laboratory of your choice and hand-carry the sample out of China.
